Why Does My Voice Crack When I Sing?

You're climbing toward a high note, it's going fine, and then — the sound splits, drops out, or flips into something thin and squeaky. It's one of the most discouraging things that can happen when you sing, especially in front of other people. If it keeps happening to you, two questions probably come first, so let's answer them right away:
Is this normal? Yes. Almost every singer cracks, including trained ones warming up cold. It is one of the most common things beginners ask about, and it is a coordination hiccup, not a sign you "can't sing."
Am I damaging my voice? Almost certainly not. An occasional crack while you sing or practice is your voice fumbling a gear change — it is not an injury, and it does not mean you tore or hurt anything. (The one thing worth watching for is persistent hoarseness that lasts for weeks, which is a different situation — covered near the end.)

What a voice crack actually is: your voice shifts gears

Think of your voice like a car with two gears. There's a lower, heavier gear you use for speaking and lower singing — and a lighter, higher gear for higher notes. As you sing up in pitch, at some point you have to shift from the heavy gear into the light one.
A voice crack is what happens when that shift is done abruptly instead of smoothly — like popping a manual transmission without using the clutch. The sound lurches, drops out for an instant, or flips suddenly into a lighter, airier register.
Here's the plain-terms version of the mechanism, and then the technical words in case you meet them elsewhere:
Your vocal folds (the two small bands in your throat that vibrate to make sound) are controlled by muscles that can make them short and thick (for lower, heavier notes) or long and thin (for higher notes).
To sing higher, the folds have to get thinner and longer. If you hang on to the thick, heavy setting too long as you climb, eventually it can't hold the pitch — and the voice snaps into the thin setting all at once. That snap is the crack.
The technical terms: the "heavy gear" is chest voice, driven mostly by the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle, which shortens and thickens the folds. The "light gear" is head voice, driven by the cricothyroid (CT) muscle, which stretches and thins them. The zone where the handoff happens is called the passaggio (Italian for "passage" — the transition area between registers). And the smooth, blended coordination that lets you cross that zone without a lurch is called mix voice. A crack is essentially a failed, sudden handoff instead of a gradual blend.
This isn't just a metaphor. EMG research measuring these two muscles (Kochis-Jennings et al., 2014 — a small, explicitly preliminary study of seven singers) found that above roughly 300 Hz (around D4), phonation shifts toward CT-dominant or near-equal muscle activity regardless of the register label the singer used. The motor handoff is real and measurable. Titze (2014) modeled why it can happen so abruptly: near the transition, the vocal folds sit in a "bi-stable" geometry that can collapse suddenly into either the heavier or the lighter configuration — which is exactly the on-a-knife's-edge feeling of a note that cracks.

Why it happens (the usual causes)

Cracks almost always trace back to one of a few things. Most singers have a favorite.
Carrying too much "chest weight" up too high. This is the most common cause on ascending high notes. You keep the heavy setting engaged past the point where it can hold the pitch, the folds can't thin fast enough, and the note either strains and then snaps, or flips abruptly into falsetto. Computational modeling by Yin and Zhang (2013) supports why you can't just muscle through it: CT stretch is the primary lever for reaching higher frequencies — TA effort alone can't substitute for it up top. Pushing harder in the heavy gear is the opposite of what the note needs.
Flipping straight into disconnected falsetto. The mirror image — the heavy setting lets go all at once and the light setting takes over with no blend, so the tone suddenly goes thin and breathy. This is common in singers who were told to "just go into head voice" without learning to carry any strength across the bridge.
Tension. A clenched jaw, a gripping tongue root, or a larynx that jams upward to "reach" for a note all interfere with the fine muscular balance the folds need. Squeeze in the wrong place and the transition can't happen cleanly.
Breath support that collapses. Pitch depends on steady air pressure below the folds. Sundberg's foundational acoustic work on singing showed that the subglottal pressure (the air pressure beneath the vocal folds) has to be continuously nudged upward as pitch rises. If your ribs cave in and that support sags right as you reach the tricky zone, the note loses its foundation and is far more likely to break.
A cold or tired voice. Cracks are far more common on an unwarmed voice, and the transition zone is usually the first thing to wobble when you're fatigued or your folds are dry (more on dryness below). This is why a crack in the first minute of singing often disappears after a proper warm-up.
Notice what these have in common: none of them is a talent problem. They're all coordination or condition problems, and coordination and condition are trainable.

Is it normal? (Two different "normal"s)

There are two situations people mean when they ask if cracking is normal, and they deserve separate answers.
Everyday singing cracks — normal. If your voice occasionally breaks on high notes, at register transitions, or when you sing cold, that is ordinary and shared by nearly everyone learning to navigate their range. It reflects a coordination that isn't yet automatic, and it reliably decreases as that coordination develops with practice.
Puberty voice change — also normal, and temporary. If you're an adolescent (or the parent of one) and the voice is cracking, dropping, and flipping unpredictably day to day, that's a distinct, developmental process. During male puberty the larynx grows, the vocal folds lengthen substantially, and the speaking pitch drops by roughly an octave. According to Voice Science Works, that descent proceeds at roughly a semitone per month over a transition that typically lasts about 18 months, and voice change usually begins around age 13 on average (a normal range spanning roughly 10.5 to 16.5 years). During that window the old higher register and the emerging lower one don't yet have a stable anchor, so the voice flips between them — "not a malfunction," as they put it, "a system in transition." The reassuring part: guided, range-appropriate singing through voice change is considered safe and beneficial — you don't have to stop singing while it settles. (Voice change is most dramatic in boys; girls' voices also change at puberty but far more subtly — the folds lengthen much less and the speaking pitch typically drops only a few semitones.)

Is it harmful? (Usually not — and the one flag to watch)

An occasional crack is not damage. It's a coordination event, not a tearing or bruising of tissue, and singers crack all the time without harm. You don't need to panic when it happens, and you don't need to stop singing over it.
Two sensible boundaries, though:
Don't force through pain. Singing can feel effortful, but it should not hurt. Sharp pain, a burning throat, or a note you can only reach by straining hard is a signal to back off, not to push harder.
*Watch for persistent hoarseness. A crack is momentary. A rough, raspy, or persistently weak voice that hangs around for weeks is different. The AAO-HNS 2018 clinical practice guideline recommends seeing a laryngologist (an ENT who specializes in the voice) if hoarseness (dysphonia) does not resolve or improve within four weeks* — or sooner if you also have a neck mass, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, or a history of tobacco use. That's the four-week rule; the older folk advice of "two weeks" isn't what current guidance actually says.

How to stop it: the fixes that work

The instinct when a note cracks is to try harder next time. That usually makes it worse, because most cracks come from too much of something — too much weight, too much air, too much squeeze. The fixes below all work by reducing effort and letting the gear change happen gradually.
1. Lip trills (bubble lips) — the classic crack fix. Blow air through loosely closed lips so they flutter ("brrr"), and glide gently up and through the spot where you'd normally crack. This is a semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercise — a fancy way of saying you partly close off the front of your mouth, which changes the air pressure in a way that helps the folds. Titze (2006) established the physics: a partial occlusion at the lips lowers the phonation threshold pressure (the minimum air pressure needed to keep the folds vibrating) and reduces the impact forces between the folds. In plain terms, lip trills make it easier to keep the sound going across the transition, and they make it very hard to over-push — so the voice tends to find the smooth handoff on its own. (Note: Titze's 2006 rationale comes from a computer simulation of a self-oscillating vocal model, not direct measurements of singers; later clinical studies add support, but strong controlled evidence in healthy singers specifically is still limited. 2. "Ng" sirens. Make the "ng" sound at the end of "sing," and slowly slide from your lowest comfortable pitch up to your highest and back down, like a slow siren. The "ng" is also semi-occluded, so it limits how hard you can press. Keep the slide smooth — wherever you hear a sudden jump or crack is exactly the spot where your gear change is abrupt, and slow, light sirens are how you teach it to smooth out.
3. Blend instead of switch (build your mix). The long-term fix is developing that middle coordination where the two gears overlap instead of clunking between them. That's the whole point of mix voice, and it's a skill you build over weeks, not a trick you flip on. 4. Support the note. Keep your ribcage comfortably open — as if you were still in the middle of an easy inhale — rather than letting it collapse the moment you start the phrase. Steady support keeps the air pressure under the note stable through the transition, which is when it's most likely to sag and break. This isn't about pushing more air; it's about keeping the flow even.
5. Release tension and warm up first. Loosen the jaw, unclench the tongue, and don't ask a cold voice to leap to your highest notes. Two to three minutes of lip trills or gentle sirens first genuinely lowers the effort it takes to cross the bridge, so cracks that show up cold often just vanish once you're warm.
6. Stay hydrated (a modest but real factor). Dry vocal folds are stiffer and take more pressure to get vibrating, which makes cracking more likely, especially up high. A review by Sivasankar and Leydon (2010) found converging evidence that dehydration increases the stiffness and viscosity of vocal-fold tissue and raises the effort needed to produce voice. Worth knowing honestly: the same review notes that robust proof that drinking more reliably improves voice outcomes is still limited — so treat hydration as sensible vocal hygiene that reduces one risk factor, not a magic fix. If you tend to breathe through your mouth (which dries the folds) or sing in dry air, it matters a bit more.

A simple practice path

If you want a concrete order to work in:
1.
Warm up with lip trills or straw phonation for 2–3 minutes, gliding gently up and down through the note where you usually crack. Effort stays low.
2.
Do slow "ng" sirens across your full range, keeping the slide smooth and quiet. Notice where the wobble is — that's your target zone.
3.
Work a mix exercise near that transition zone (not far below or above it) at a moderate volume — mix develops by spending time in the bridge, not around it.
4.
Keep sessions short and frequent. Ten to fifteen minutes most days beats one long weekly grind — motor coordination consolidates through repetition over time, and short sessions also keep you from tiring out (a tired voice cracks more).
Expect gradual progress. Registration is a motor skill, so the crack tends to get less disruptive over a few weeks of consistent work and more reliably smooth over months — not in a single session.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my voice crack only on high notes? Because high notes are where the gear change happens. Lower notes stay comfortably in your heavier register, so there's no handoff to fumble. As you climb toward the passaggio, the folds have to shift to a thinner, lighter setting — and if that shift is abrupt (usually from carrying too much weight up, or from a cold or tired voice), the note cracks right at the transition. Practicing gentle lip trills and sirens through that specific zone is the direct fix.
Is it bad to keep singing if my voice keeps cracking? No — an occasional crack isn't harmful, and you learn to cross the transition smoothly by practicing through it, not by avoiding it. The one exception is pain: if singing hurts, or your voice is persistently hoarse for weeks (not just tired for an afternoon), ease off and, if hoarseness lasts four weeks or more, see a laryngologist.
Will my voice stop cracking as I get better? For most singers, yes. Cracking is a coordination issue, and coordination improves with consistent practice. It won't necessarily vanish overnight — even trained singers can crack on a cold voice — but the frequency and severity drop substantially as your mix develops and you learn to manage weight, breath, and tension through the transition.
Why does my voice crack when I'm not even singing high? A few possibilities. If you're an adolescent, ongoing puberty voice change makes the voice flip unpredictably across its whole range for a while — that's normal and temporary. Otherwise, cracks lower in the voice often come from a dry or fatigued voice, from very breathy fold closure (not enough contact, so the tone destabilizes), or from a sudden register shift you're making without realizing it. Warming up, hydrating, and firming up your onsets with a gentle "ng" or "nay" usually helps.
How do I fix voice cracks fast? There's no instant cure, but the fastest relief is almost always: warm up properly, drop the volume, and do lip trills or "ng" sirens through the trouble spot at low effort. Many cracks are just a cold or over-pushed voice, and both of those respond within minutes. The lasting fix — building a real mix so the transition is smooth by default — takes weeks of regular practice.
Is voice cracking during puberty something to worry about? Generally no. It's a normal developmental stage: the larynx is growing and the voice is dropping about an octave over roughly a year and a half, so it flips between the old and new registers while it settles. Guided, range-appropriate singing through that period is considered safe. If an adolescent's voice change hasn't started at all by around 15–16, or if hoarseness persists well beyond the transition, that's worth mentioning to a doctor — but everyday cracking during the change itself is expected.
